How do I add a WhatsApp chat button to my website?

Short answer

Use WhatsApp's click-to-chat link, https://wa.me/ followed by your number with country code and no plus sign or spaces (for India, 91 then the 10-digit number). Add that link to a button or floating icon on your site. WordPress, Shopify and Wix also have plugins or apps that add a floating WhatsApp button without code.

Create your click-to-chat link

  1. 1Write your number in international format without +, spaces or leading zero, for example 91XXXXXXXXXX for an Indian number.
  2. 2Your link is https://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX (with your own number).
  3. 3To pre-fill a message, add ?text= followed by your message with spaces written as %20, for example ?text=Hi%20I%20have%20a%20question.
  4. 4Open the link on your phone to confirm it opens a chat with the right number.

Add it to your site

  • Any platform: add a button or text link in your header, contact page or footer and paste the wa.me link as its destination.
  • WordPress: install a reputable WhatsApp chat plugin for a floating button, or add a button block with the link.
  • Shopify: use a WhatsApp chat app from the Shopify App Store, or add the link to a button in the theme editor.
  • Wix and Squarespace: add a button element with the link, or use an available WhatsApp widget or embed.

Make it work well

  • Use a WhatsApp Business account so you can set a greeting, away message and business hours.
  • Place the button where people decide to contact you, such as product and service pages, not only the home page.
  • Check on mobile that a floating button does not cover your menu, cart or cookie banner.
  • Keep a normal phone number and email visible too, since not every visitor uses WhatsApp.

When a button is not enough

If you get many enquiries, the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) lets you send order updates, automate replies and connect chats to your CRM. It needs a Meta business account and usually a provider or developer to set up.

When to get help

A simple button is a DIY job, but automated replies, order notifications or routing chats into a CRM need the WhatsApp Business Platform and some development. DCPL Technology's team in Surat can set up WhatsApp integrations and automations that connect enquiries to your existing tools.
