Why do customers add products to the cart but not buy?

Short answer

Customers usually abandon carts because of surprises or friction at checkout: shipping costs shown late, forced account creation, too few payment options, slow pages, or not trusting the store. In India, missing UPI or cash on delivery is a common reason. Fix the biggest friction points first, then send abandoned-checkout reminders to win back people who were nearly ready to buy.

The common reasons

  • Extra costs such as shipping, COD charges or taxes appear only at the last step.
  • Customers are made to create an account before they can pay.
  • The payment method they prefer is missing, such as UPI, cards, wallets or cash on delivery.
  • The site is slow or awkward on mobile, where most browsing happens.
  • The store does not look trustworthy: no clear contact details, return policy or reviews.
  • Delivery time is unclear, or the customer was only comparing prices and saving items for later.

Find where you are losing people

  1. 1Look at your store analytics to see how many sessions reach the cart, start checkout and complete an order.
  2. 2Place a test order yourself on a phone using mobile data and note every moment of confusion.
  3. 3Ask a friend who has never used the store to buy something while you watch silently.
  4. 4Read customer messages and returns notes for repeated complaints.

Fixes that usually help

  • Show shipping costs or a free-shipping threshold on the product and cart pages, not only at checkout.
  • Allow guest checkout.
  • Offer the payment methods your customers expect. For Indian shoppers that usually means UPI alongside cards, and cash on delivery if your margins and return rates allow it.
  • Show estimated delivery dates and a clear return or exchange policy near the Buy button.
  • Compress large images and remove apps you no longer use to speed up pages.
  • Display contact details, a WhatsApp number or customer reviews to build trust.

Win back the ones who left

Shopify and most e-commerce platforms can automatically email customers who entered their contact details but did not finish checkout. Turn this on, write a friendly reminder with a direct link back to their cart, and test it. Some stores add a second reminder or a WhatsApp or SMS message, but avoid sending too many, and only offer discounts if you are comfortable with customers learning to wait for them.

When to get help

If you have made the obvious fixes and checkout completion is still low, the cause is often deeper, such as theme performance, payment gateway setup or a confusing product page. DCPL Technology builds and optimises online stores, including Shopify, and can review your checkout journey, speed and payment integrations and then fix what is getting in the way.
