How do I change prices on lots of products at once in Shopify?

Short answer

You can change many Shopify prices at once in three ways: select products in the admin and use the bulk editor, export your products to a CSV file, edit the prices in a spreadsheet and import it back, or use a pricing app for rule-based changes. Whichever you choose, test on a few products first and keep a backup of the original prices.

Option 1: the bulk editor in your Shopify admin

For a few dozen products, the bulk editor is the quickest route. It shows selected products and their variants in a spreadsheet-like grid where you can type new prices directly.

  1. 1Go to Products in your Shopify admin and filter the list (for example by collection, vendor or product type) so only the products you want to change are shown.
  2. 2Tick the products, then choose the option to bulk edit them.
  3. 3Add the Price and Compare-at price columns if they are not already visible.
  4. 4Type the new prices, check a few rows carefully, then save.

Option 2: CSV export and import for hundreds of products

For large catalogues, a spreadsheet is easier because you can use formulas, such as increasing every price by a fixed percentage.

  1. 1Export your products from the Products page as a CSV file and save an untouched copy as your backup.
  2. 2Open the file in Google Sheets or Excel and change only the variant price and compare-at price columns. Leave the handle column and other columns as they are.
  3. 3Use a formula for percentage changes, then round the results to sensible price points.
  4. 4Make a copy of the file with only three or four products and import that first, choosing to overwrite existing products.
  5. 5Check those products on the storefront. If they are correct, import the full file.

Option 3: apps for rules and schedules

Bulk pricing apps on the Shopify App Store can apply rules such as "raise everything in this collection by 5%" or schedule a sale to start and end on set dates. They are useful when price changes are frequent or need to be reversed later. If your prices depend on something that changes daily, such as metal rates for jewellery, a specialised app that recalculates from that input saves the most time.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Editing the handle column in a CSV, which can create duplicate products instead of updating existing ones.
  • Forgetting that each variant has its own price, so changing a product may not change all its sizes or colours.
  • Leaving compare-at prices lower than the new price, which makes sale badges look wrong.
  • Changing prices during a live sale or ad campaign without updating the ads.

When to get help

If price updates are a weekly chore, depend on outside data such as supplier costs or metal rates, or keep going wrong because of complex variants, it is worth automating them. DCPL Technology builds Shopify stores and custom Shopify apps, including pricing automation, and can set up a repeatable process that previews changes before they go live.
