How do I calculate the GSM of grey fabric and the expected weight of a taka?
Short answer
GSM is the fabric's weight in grams per square metre: divide the weight in grams by the length in metres multiplied by the width in metres (inches × 0.0254). For a taka, multiply the quality's standard weight per metre by the taka's length. If the actual weight differs from that by more than the tolerance you set, check the taka before it leaves the unit.

The formulas
- Width in metres = width in inches × 0.0254.
- GSM = weight in grams ÷ (length in metres × width in metres).
- Expected taka weight = standard weight per metre × taka length in metres.
- Weight per 100 m = taka weight ÷ taka length × 100.
Worked example (illustrative numbers)
- 1A quality weighs 11.47 kg per 100 m at 65.5 inches wide.
- 2Width = 65.5 × 0.0254 = 1.6637 m, so 100 m covers 166.37 square metres.
- 3GSM = 11,470 g ÷ 166.37 m² ≈ 68.9 g/m².
- 4A 117 m taka of this quality should weigh about 11.47 ÷ 100 × 117 ≈ 13.42 kg.
Example: Loomiro
Loomiro, DCPL Technology's weaving unit software, works out the average weight per 100 m as each taka is entered, compares it with the quality's standard and flags a difference of more than 5% on the spot. Its website also offers a free taka weight and GSM calculator that needs no login.
When to get help
If weights drift often, the cause is usually upstream — yarn, beam or loom settings — and needs your weaving master. Tracking every taka against its standard, as Loomiro does at taka entry, shows which loom or beam to look at first.
